Back to School

It's been a while since we were intentional about learning. Maybe I should confess that I've really enjoyed the break from planning activities. It's been good to have the hiatus - for both of us.

When he worked on the sandpaper letters, I was able to say, "Oh, it's been a while since we've done these, let me show you in case you forgot." I choose letters from his name b.c he likes to write his name and it's almost legible to others. :)

In the picture on the left it appears that he's making the letter H in the red rice. In reality, it was A that he attempted. After retracing the sandpaper letter he was able to write it perfectly. Yay!

Afterwards he practiced sweeping. Again I said, "It's been a long time...let me put a target on the floor for you." I grabbed a nearby roll of masking tape and made the target. Not sure if he knew what the word "target" meant, I asked. He looked at me like, Duh-Mom and said, "It's what you shoot at." Of course. Here's a video explanation with a Montessori teacher.
Later in the day he practiced bamming drumming.

I love your red rice! If I do colored rice instead of cornmeal Tatum might be more inclined to practice her letters. We had to throw our colored rice out though because one of the cats decided to poop in it during the two minutes that Tatum left the room to go potty :(

I love your colored rice too! My next school purchase will be sandpaper letters, unless I get the urge to try to make them. But I really want to own a nice set of them.

We leave tomorrow for our staff conference then come back and have a week until Eli starts Hungarian preschool. YIKES. It will be so lonely and sad without him here. I am praying he gets the language quickly!!!

His name is legible to me!! That was cute, a target is what you shoot at. Spoken by a true "John Majors".
