First buy a purple cabbage. Cut it up and put it in a pot of water. Let it boil then simmer for 20 minutes, then cool. Open a window. Your kitchen will smell...um, earthy.
Next, grab assorted concoctions from your cabinet. From L to R ours were: borax, baking soda, lime juice, vinegar, diluted castile soap, and hot sauce.
Add a few tablespoons of your colored cabbage water...
and say COOL!
Thanks to Mom and Kiddo, we had a blast with this science experiment.
I laughed out loud when I read on her blog, "Of course this experiment involves the concept of bases and acids and pHs, but blah, blah we did not bother with concepts!"
Like Kiddo, Mr. Intensity had a grand time of playing, mixing, finding new solutions and colors after the initial experiment.
He liked best the baking soda and vinegar that went "ka-splode!"

Yeah! So glad you enjoyed it!
Wow, what fun!!!
Looks like lots of fun! Now if I only had a set of nice wine glasses like those...
I think we are going to try it!! Isaac and I have date time everyday while the other 2 are napping...he has been wanting to do experiments so I have been looking for easy, not too messy ideas!! Thanks!!
Sweet! This is going on the 'must do' list for this next week!
So cool!
What did you do with the cold, soggy cabbage?
I tossed the cabbage. If I'd been thinkin' I woulda planned to turn it into something yummy. I wasn't thinking and it didn't smell all that yummy. Wish my worms would eat their compost faster!
I bet he had loads of fun. Look how much older his face looks. Very mature. If I didn't know he was four I would have guessed 7 from looking at his pictures.
