Wanting a quick hike this evening, we went to Devil's Backbone. It's not too far from where we're staying and easy for the little people in our family. Once in the parking lot, we began chatting with this man, who pointed out how the birds were chattering. He said that noise told him there were snakes in the trees trying to eat oriole eggs.
Yep, we were able to see them! If the man had not been there looking, the snakes (and orioles!) would have gone unnoticed. Even though snakes creep me out, I think it was the highlight of my day.The hike was easy, especially since we missed the heat of the day and were there about 6:30pm. We even experienced a special treat of a few drops of rain near the end of the hike. I'm not sure if you can tell from these pictures, but the rocks jut out of the ground along a ridge line - like nothing I've ever seen before.
(I tried to get Schaeffer in the picture, but no can do - he was on my back.)
Yesterday we spent a few hours by the Poudre River at Lions Open Space, also very close to us. A storm blew through Friday night so the waters were a bit murky. The kids still had a blast throwing rocks and digging in the sand.
The water is super cold. We took our lunch and lounged in the shade.Schaeffer had a tooth poke through this weekend. I want to say he is sleeping better but we still have nights of interrupted sleep. He is also moving to his knees. It won't be long before he is crawling. At 6 months old he favors more the mannerisms of his (intense) brother rather than his (compliant) sister. We love them all the same! Variety is the spice of life, right?
