Sandpaper Letter Matching

A friend of mine let me borrow her sandpaper letters. In December I bought the materials to make my own - and made about 5 letters. I stopped because Mr. Intensity showed little or no interest in tracing the letters or wanting to write.

However, in recent days his interested has piqued.

On a family outing few weeks ago, in Borders, I flipped through a preschool workbook. One of the worksheets had two columns of letters. The child was to draw a line from the capital letter to it's matching lowercase letter.

Since I don't really like to use worksheets, my mind instantly went to using the sandpaper letters. Not only was I able to coerce him into tracing the letters, but he enjoyed matching the uppercase and lower case. Mr. Intensity really put his whole body into the "game."

While we were "playing" I just wondered: how on earth would this poor child sit at a desk all day?

Find some great links here and here if you're interested in making your own sandpaper letters.

can you do this with any letters? Does it have to be sandpaper? Not sure what makes the sandpaper so special... do tell.

It doesn't have to be sandpaper letters. The fun about using the textured letters is for the beginning writer to trace. They get one more sensory input in helping them remember how to form the letter. I've seen people use felt to make these letters, or, you could just have the child trace the letter on plain paper. Let me know if this doesn't make sense.

I have made up a couple of capital/lowercase matching games for the kids.

My big guy (age 6) needs to physically move something -- worksheets just don't do it for him.
