Fire Safety Month

Mr. Intensity's preschool class went to the Hall of Flame Museum this week to learn about fire safety, since October is Fire Safety Month.

We had been before and I wasn't so sure about going back since it's not a very kid-friendly place. (Don't touch the old fire trucks!)

However, this experience was much different - they were prepared for a class of preschoolers.  The docent read a super kids book (I can't remember the title) about a dragon for tea.  The book had all kinds of fire safety tips.  Then the kids watched a video from the 80s with Little Richard singing a fire safety song about "fall and crawl" and "don't hide, go outside" with a reminder to have a meeting place once you're outside.
Friday, firemen brought their trucks to the preschool.  Mr. Intensity doesn't attend on Fridays so we went for the demonstration.  I was very glad that one of the firemen suited up with the respirator and crawled around for the kids to know he wasn't scary.  It was repeated that "kids sometimes hide from us in a fire because we sound scary" and "make sure your family has a meeting place outside."  We're meeting by our mailbox.

The best part was getting to spray a hose!
For other Fire Safety Month ideas, Our Montessori Story shares here what they did.  Have you checked the batteries in your smoke detector?

Why, I don't know, but I found the name "Hall of Flame" extraordinarily amusing.

How fun for him to get to hold the fire hose!!
