He's Gaining Weight

Good news: Schaeffer has gained 11 ounces since Thursday.

Bad news: after nursing him in the lactation consultant's office today he hadn't gained anything.  This means he's not drinking anything from me.

Overall the consultation was very encouraging.  The plan is still to nurse then pump then feed him what I pump.  The lactation specialist gave me a Calma to help simulate drinking from the breast.  She said that she has seen other babies turn around using the Calma.  I am hopeful.

I don't know how I stumbled on your blog...but I had BFding low supply issues for all three of my babies. I used a product called the lact-aid that literally saved my first born daughters life. You can find information on the web at www.lact-aid.com don't let the horribly 70's web design distract youu!

Hang in there! You can do this and so can Schaeffer (sorry if I misspelled that!) I'll pray for you two during this time.

Oh Julie - this is frustrating and something I went through with Scout. At his two week appointment, he was still not back at his birth weight (7 lb 3 oz at birth, 6 lb 5oz at two weeks) My Ped had seen me successfully nurse and fatten up two previous babies, and was concerned about Scouts ability to nurse and grow. Much to my frustration, he encouraged me to pop a bottle in his mouth and see what happens. He gained 11 oz. in 24 hours. Woah. I made the very hard and sad decision to bottle feed him. Something I had never done with my other two. I pumped and bottle fed him and also used formula. He grew quickly and beautifully. I don't regret my decision, but it was a very sad and scary time for me as a mom. That third kid is a TRIP. Hang in there - your large one will grow!!!

My previous two babies were 10 pounders (9-15 and 10-2). They were both BAD nursers. The 10-2 kid redefined bad. He made nursing miserable (just being honest). I nursed, pumped, and supplemented every 2 to 3 hours (with four other kids in the house, two of which were homeschooled) for what seemed like one millions years. We managed to get my milk supply and still nursed for 10 months, just what I had done with my others. There were tears. It was exhausting. It was not an experience for the faint of nursing heart.
