Weekend Snapshots

We like to read 'round here.

Notice that Sister got piggies this week.  (That's pig-tails in her hair.  So cute.)  Brother is logging his reading hours for the library; there will be a carnival at the Thompson library in December.  Children are rewarded with play money to spend at the carnival for the hours spent reading.  He is very motivated.

Hubby and Brother have started building a tree house.  Hubby expects it to take at least a year to build because he is making Brother do all the work he is able.

Below Brother is cranking a wrench (at least that is what I think it is called. :)  He is loving this project.

'Tis the season for pumpkin muffins.  My parents sent the cute recipe holder - the metal box bottom left corner of card.

My container garden is about to peter out but I harvested one jelly tomato and two red peppers today.  My tomato plants have plenty of blooms but the autumn sun is setting behind the trees and they don't get enough sun now.

The jalapeno plant is rockin' out.  There are more peppers than I can use.

Saturday night I hosted a cooking class, teaching traditional methods of food preparation.  Below you see chicken feet I used in broth.  This picture totally grossed out my neighbor who said she would never eat at my house again.  Her comment caught me off guard because her house is decked out with gory Halloween decorations.

Beauty is in the eye of the beholder, I suppose.

Link up with Mom and Kiddo and show off your weekend snapshots.

Love this post, it all seems so cozy. I always have trouble removing the membrane from the feet, so I have stuck to bone broth for a while. But maybe I needn't bother removing it?

Thanks for linking up again.

Wow, your broth pot looks a lot prettier than mine does when I make broth. Your friend would be appalled! By the way, chicken feet are enjoyed like a delicacy by the kids in the village. They throw them right on the fire and then chew on them like pork rinds. The heads too!

I am envious of your tree house! I have always wanted one for my boys.
Love your container garden.
The chicken feet do seem sort of Halloween-ish. Perhaps you could have some on to boil for Halloween night. :)

Seeing the chicken feet in the pot remind me why I'm a vegetarian!! :-). You have inspired me in many other ways with many other things though!! Miss you!

Mom & Kiddo: I boiled the feet for 10 minutes trying to remove the membrane and other dirt. These feet came straight from the chicken. Another farmer from whom I get feet scalds the entire chicken and his feet are much cleaner and the membrane is removed in the process.

Linsday: As you'll read above, I was scalding the feet. When I made broth, I had 2 carcasses plus these feet. It was some of the best broth I've ever tasted. The chickens had been smoked for 2.5 hours. I've heard of other cultures (Chinese) enjoying the feet as delicacies.

Phyllis: The tree house is envied by all who see it. :) I forgot to mention in the post that I've planted spinach and radishes in the garden. They've germinated but with the setting sun, the garden isn't getting enough light.

Eberle Family: I miss you, too - this reminds me to check your blog to see how your two new additions are adjusting. This weather is perfect for camping. JI was sad they didn't get to meet up this year. Maybe next year!

The idea of a cooking class from you makes me miss you too. Sometimes I still run across one of your handwritten recipes or Bible verses and it makes me smile. How blessed those in your cooking class are!
